Employees Union wins parking benefit parity for all staff
Staff of the University, irrespective of pay class, can now purchase a red tagged parking bay if they so choose. The Employees Union can claim a resounding victory for demanding equality in the parking benefit for all staff employed at the University.
The demand for the removal of parking restrictions at the University of Cape Town has been on the bargaining agenda of the Employees Union for a number of years. Each year, the employer failed to remove restrictions.
This year, 2022, the Employees Union referred the parking matter to the The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Spurred on by the pending CCMA Arbitration hearing on 22 September 2022; the University Space Allocation committee decided to amend the parking policy as such:
Removal of the current policy below:
• Academic staff with the rank of senior lecturer and above and PASS staff (professional, administrative support and
service staff) of pay class 10 and above may purchase these parking disks for an annual fee.
Replace with:
• All staff may purchase these parking discs on a "first come first serve" basis for an annual fee.

Professional, Administrative, Support and Service staff in the pay class 2 - 9 are free to purchase a red parking disc to park in the red tagged parking bays that are close to their places of work/offices, etc.
The first-come-first-serve method for allocation of parking bays is applied. Staff are encouraged to complete their applications as early as possible.
The Employees Union will demand vetting of the first-come-first-serve allocation process, in an effort to ensure that this not a pyrrhic victory
